I was watching a Bill Wurtz Interview recently and, though I’m not finished watching yet, I was struck by one thing Bill mentioned as part of his “creative process”, I guess we’ll call it; namely, the idea of making the thing you’re making shorter and shorter until it seems manageable enough. Quote:

This is the advice I give to people all the time, they’re like, “How do I get started, how do I get started, how do I get out of my own way and stop freaking out about everything?” I say just try something shorter. Just for now, just for the heck of it, just try something shorter. If that doesn’t work, try something shorter, and if that doesn’t work, there’s a backup plan, which is just try something even shorter.

I feel like that’s something I should apply more. I’m a creative person when I need to be, but I’ll have a vision in mind and just never get around to putting it on the page (or canvas, or timeline, or what have you, you get the point). What I’ll try doing, then, is break it down into pieces that are small enough for me to get exactly what I want in within that tiny timeframe and then slowly work out and out and longer and longer until I can get to where I’m actually intending to be. While still getting the satisfaction of having created something
